The case of the mysterious hissing
Animal Mystery?!?!
We recently got our new boiler installed later in February. One day after work, we decided to head to the house and see how the progress with the boiler was going; was it done? when will it be done? when will we stop freezing our butts off? etc! When I got there, Tim, the boiler man was waiting in the car for one of us to arrive. I introduced myself and he informed me that he spent the day tracing wires in the house and that the heat was still not on. He did tell me however, that we would have our heat the following day (thank God!). He also mentioned that "as I was walking down to the basement, my broom hit the insulation going down the stairs", he also said that when the broom hit it, something "hissed" at him! After being grossed out, I didn't find it all that shocking. Tim said that we better be careful going down the basement stairs or try to see whats hiding in our wall. We both fled the scene before Ben arrived.
After I told Ben about the news of the boiler, he said he would stay at the house for a while and do a few things. I texted him and told him to watch out in the basement and that Tim said something hissed at him from the insulation going downstairs. Ben didn't hear anything, but as he got to the top of the stairs, he heard the hissss. So, being the brave man that Ben is, he zipped up his coat all the way, pulled on his hat, slipped on his gloves, and put on his safety glasses. He thought "if something comes out, have it come out now!" as he pulled the first piece of insulation out. Ben threw it into the mud room and exmained it to see if he could see a critter. Nothing. Ben pulled the next piece, placed it in the mud room, nothing again. He examined both pieces and after seeing nothing, he finished up and headed home.
RING RING! Tim called Ben the next day while he was at the house. He informed Ben of the progress of the boiler then added "I saw the insulation in the mud room and the broom with it, so I nudged it with the broom and I heard the hissing again!" He told Ben to warn me in case I wanted to clear it out. After laughing about the situation, Ben called me and told me the news. He knew I was heading to the house soon so he wanted me to be warned, but then told me to move the insulation outside so we don't have a critter inside the house. Being nervous and not even wanting to go, I reluctently went.
As I arrived, I yelled down to Tim, then headed down to talk to him about the boiler, but more importantly, about the critter I was supposed to move out. He offered to help and I immediately took him up on it. A few moments later, Tim came upstairs and we prepared ourselves; gloves, glasses, hat, and a broom. Tim grabbed the end of the insulation and I scooted it out with the broom. Quickly, we got it all out and pressed the broom all over it, and guess what?!?! There was NOTHING! Something hissed and we don't know what. Tim mentioned that it sounded somewhat like a cat hissing, but to this day, we have not found a thing.
